Russell Mawhinney

Russell is a partner in our Commercial Law team and is based in our Queenstown office.
Russell was previously a partner in HM Associates – Property & Business Law which he established with Mike Holloway in April 2003. Prior to that he took over the practice of Laurian O’Dea in 2002 following some ten years of legal practice in Hamilton and Dunedin.
Russell also has experience in the financial services and sports marketing industries, including international experience in Hong Kong before his return to New Zealand.
Russell is a member of the New Zealand Law Society Property Law Section Executive Committee, a director of Otago Country Cricket Association, and has recently been elected as a Queenstown Lakes District Councillor.
Russell was raised in Central Otago before attending Otago University. He was an Otago age group representative in rugby and cricket as well as captaining NZ Universities and representing Otago, Northern Districts and Griqualand West (South Africa) at cricket for several years prior to settling into his legal career.
Interests now include family activities, helping with kids sports, mountain biking, skiing, golf and tasting good Central Otago wines.
